Yes, all batteries eventually expire. AA batteries have a range of shelf lives between 3 and 20 years, wholly dependent on the battery's chemistry and storage conditions. We list the rated shelf life on all our product listings when available so you can make an informed choice when buying spares or bulk cells.
At HBPlus Battery Specialists, this factor is often dependent on your device's battery drain and operating temperature. Typically, batteries with larger capacities (mAh) have longer overall runtimes. AA cells tend to max out at 3,500 mAh, and you can filter our wide-selection of batteries by battery capacity (mAh).

If you're using just a few of the aforementioned gadgets, you're bound to get through plenty of batteries over the course of the year. That may make rechargeable batteries a more appealing option in the long term, but they're not as convenient, and for certain devices, you're better off sticking with disposables. Of course, not any disposable will do, you want batteries with a decent life so they won't need replacing when you need them most.
To work out which AA batteries are best for various situations, we've run numerous pairs of batteries continuously in a high-powered, 500 lumens LED torch, measuring the voltage every 30 minutes. The torch requires a steady 1.5V to run at full brightness and approximately 1.2V to run at an acceptable brightness level, which most batteries fell under in less than an hour. We then selected the best batteries based on performance and price.
Below you'll find the list of those that came on top in their respective categories. If you need further guidance as to which batteries suit your needs best, there's a buying guide towards the bottom of the page explaining the differences between various types of batteries, including rechargeable variants.

Batteries are among the best bulk-buying bargains. An eight-count pack of Duracell AA batteries cost 93 cents per battery, while a 40-count pack cost 45 cents per battery, a 52% discount. Bottled water purchased in bulk is on average 50% less expensive.
Generic batteries are generally cheaper. Amazon sells generic AA batteries for about 30 cents a battery, while Rayovac, a budget battery maker, sells batteries that can be found in Walmart for as cheap as 24 cents a battery sometimes.
Beyond price, though, the real test of a battery is longevity. How long does it last To test that, we purchased a pack of standard AA Duracell batteries and put them up against the AA Activ Energy batteries. Our testing devices was a single LIGHTWAY 300 Lumen LED Flashlights, which we purchased from Aldi a while back. The flashlight takes 4 AA batteries.
Beware of the cheap ALDI batteries! Both the rechargeable as well as the regular AA & AAAs explode and leak powdery battery acid all over the inside of the battery compartments leaving corrosion throughout and rendering the items unusable. This has now happened to THREE different belongings of mine, a wall clock, a TV remote and an expensive Princeton Tec head lamp. I have taken photos and contacted ALDI customer service, so we will see what their response is.
Purchased Aldi 9 volt batteries for a stud finder 06/01/2021kept a spare battery in my pocket later in the day something started getting hot in my pocket. l pulled the battery out of my pocket the heat from the battery was untouchable. The heat generated from the battery would burn your hand if you held it or could destroy the appliance it was in. Aldi needs to review the safety of this product.
Any & every brand of 9 volt batteries should never be carried loosely, ever. Any conductive material (read metal or foil) in your pocket or pouch can cross the terminals and start a fire. Coins, keys, paper clip, jewelry are the most common items. There are cheap protective 9v battery battery terminal caps available for people like me who carry spare 9v batteries.
I would recommend Active Energy over Duracell any day. My personal experience with Duracell have been leakage every time. I used to use the Duracells all the time, but over the last 10 years they have done nothing but leak. I have not had that issue with the Active Energy. I go with the Active batteries because they are cost effective. And their duration, has not been a problem. When you compare both to Duracell, the Active Energy comes out on top. Just do the math. For everything that I use a battery for, they have never been in anything for an extensive amount of time, nothing more than a year at least. If one wants a name brand I would recommend anything but Duracell. 59ce067264
